About the event

Art + Performance: Traces Transformed with Spike Mason
Be immersed in a meditative sound bath with saxophonist Spike Mason at the Art Gallery at Royal Park.

About this Event

Welcome to the first of QVMAG's Art + Performance series - where musicians, dancers, and actors respond to and give new life into our exhibitions through performance.

Step into a sonic sanctuary as saxophonist and sound artist Spike Mason performs a live sound bath among the photographic works of Traces: Chris Bell.

This unique performance invites you to slow down and tune in, as Spike weaves natural sound textures and ambient tones into a meditative soundscape that resonates with the visual stillness of Bell’s photography.

  • Inspired by nature, the sound bath amplifies the quiet beauty of the exhibition
  • Free-flowing and drop-in – stay for 10 minutes or linger for the full duration
  • Restorative and immersive, offering a tranquil pause in your day

Let the interplay of sound and image guide you into a deeper sensory experience.

About the performer

Spike Mason is a Launceston-based saxophonist, composer, and self-described “improvising musicianer” whose work spans genres, traditions, and communities.

With a deep commitment to sonic exploration, Spike creates immersive soundscapes that blur the boundaries between performance and meditation.

His extensive experience includes collaborations with musicians of all styles – from jazz and experimental to folk and classical – and a rich history of community-based music projects that celebrate inclusivity.

  • Sound baths and ambient soundscapes
  • Live music from diverse instruments and traditions
  • Durational dance-theatre works with live accompaniment

Held each month on a Saturday afternoon, these are FREE drop-in events, with no registration required. With no set lists or schedules, you can stay for ten minutes or two hours.

Keep an eye out for upcoming sessions, held across both of our sites at the Museum at Inveresk and the Art Gallery at Royal Park. Join us to experience visual art in dialogue with performance, where QVMAG becomes a space for reflection, immersion, and discovery.

About the exhibition

Traces: Chris Bell

A passionate naturalist, Chris Bell has been photographing wild places and wild things for over 30 years.

Through the lens of his camera, Bell captures patterns and traces in the landscape and blurs the lines between wilderness photography and art photography.

His work casts a spotlight on vulnerable places and threatened species to bolster conservation efforts.

“It is crucial we re-establish our reverence of nature and regain an understanding of its workings if there is to be any future for humanity." - Chris Bell
