Jazz Outreach Initiative's acclaimed Jazz Vegas Orchestra Present a Homegrown Series event, "The Making of a Legend, The Music of Nathan Tanouye" with Special Guest Clint Holmes!

Composer, arranger, educator, and trombonist, Nathan Tanouye has grown a global reputation as one of the great composers of our age. As Jazz Vegas Orchestra’s lead trombonist, he has composed and arranged music commissioned for the orchestra for several years. This concert is part of JVO’s new “Homegrown Series” spotlighting the incredible talents of Las Vegas’s local musicians and composers who, like Nathan Tanouye, are quickly rising to legendary status.

Joining the Jazz Vegas Orchestra is celebrated singer/songwriter and headliner, Clint Holmes performing the iconic “Las Vegas Suite!”  The 5-movement suite with music by Nathan Tanouye and lyrics by 2-time Grammy® nominee, Clint Holmes was first released in 2019 with the Las Vegas Jazz Connection. The album, still streaming, features many of the Jazz Vegas Orchestra’s lead players and along with Tanouye and Ron George, was produced by the late Carolyn Freeman (American Jazz Initiative), Ann Parenti (Forgotten Song Foundation), and Rob Case (New Pants Publishing, Inc).  Chic Compass Magazine noted, Clint Holmes “is the perfect blend to this project. His voice lends to each tune a unique song styling that mirrors the lyrics he wrote for the compositions. Then there is Nathan. His talent is without boundaries, and he can draw the listener into the world he is painting with every note he writes.” (Spring/Summer 2019 Issue Las Vegas Suite – Chic Compass Magazine)

ABOUT NATHAN TANOUYE:
Nathan Tanouye serves as Jazz Vegas Orchestra’s Lead Trombonist and also mentors Jazz Outreach Initiative’s students through programs such as its Las Vegas Youth Jazz Orchestra and JOI in Schools programs. An alumnus of UNLV, Nathan Tanouye holds a Bachelor of Music with dual concentration in Applied Trombone and Jazz Studies. He also holds a Master of Music in Trombone Performance from Texas Tech University.

Tanouye’s musical endeavors are diverse, both as a trombonist and as a composer/arranger. As a freelance trombonist, he has worked with some of the biggest names in the business including Natalie Cole, Johnny Mathis, Tony Bennett, Luciano Pavarotti, Placido Domingo, Andrea Bocelli, Bette Midler, Martin Nievera, Aretha Franklin, Barbra Streisand, Alicia Keys, Usher, Jennifer Hudson, Kelly Clarkson, Maren Morris, Kanye West, The Chainsmokers, Journey, The Who, and The Jonas Brothers. He spent nine years as Celine Dion’s trombonist and arranger, which included multiple tours in the United States, Canada, Europe, Asia, and Australia. In addition, he plays Principal Trombone in the Las Vegas Philharmonic and is Trombonist, Composer & Arranger with Santa Fe & The Fat City Horns, the internationally recognized band which was presented with the Dean’s Medal Award at the 2019 Hall of Fame ceremony at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.

As a composer, he has written works in a diverse range of styles for numerous types of ensembles, ranging from flute and harp duo to full symphony orchestra. Notable commissions include Kokopelli’s Dance (2005), 11 Colors (2009), Loki’s Revenge (2010), and Desert Flight (2015), Tanouye has also done extensive work as an arranger and orchestrator for internationally acclaimed artists like Human Nature, Bette Midler, Celine Dion, and Kanye West. He is also Music Director/Composer/Arranger/Producer/Trombone soloist for the Las Vegas Jazz Connection orchestra, which has recorded four albums of his compositions and arrangements: Crossings (2005), Remembering Russ (2008), 11 (2013), and Las Vegas Suite (2019). Currently, Tanouye holds the position of Associate Professor of Jazz and Commercial Music, and Studio Trombone at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. He also plays in Lady Gaga’s Jazz & Piano show at the Park MGM. He continues to find inspiration writing, playing, and teaching music and spending time with his wife Bonnie and their four boys – Nickolas, Oliver, Alex, and Jeffry.

ABOUT JAZZ OUTREACH INITIATIVE / JAZZ VEGAS ORCHESTRA:
The Jazz Vegas Orchestra is one of the most prolific and exciting big bands packing venues with nearly 30 performances per year. Composed of 19 of the area’s most renowned jazz musicians, the Jazz Vegas Orchestra is presented by Jazz Outreach Initiative whose mission serves tens of thousands of students annually through its mission, “Connecting the language of music to the language of life through education, outreach, and performances.” Through its affiliation with the legendary Jazz at Lincoln Center, “JOI” presents several programs both created locally and licensed by JALC reaching students across Southern Nevada and beyond. Jazz Outreach Initiative was founded in spring 2017 by Maestros Kenny Rampton and Gary Cordell and is a GuideStar Platinum Shield-rated 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization supporting music education through the generosity of donors.  Clint Holmes serves as one of JOI's Advisory Board members.
