Participants will practice sewing fundamentals through guided exercises before applying their new skills to real projects.What Students Will LearnSewing machine parts, functions, and proper setupStraight stitching, curves, and sewing techniquesPattern tracing and construction basicsFabric cutting and preparationGarment assembly and finishing methodsProjectsStudents will create:A small circular pillow to practice foundational sewing skillsA reversible tulip hat designed and constructed from start to finishNo prior sewing experience is required. This course is perfect for curious beginners who enjoy making things with their hands and want to learn a valuable lifelong skill in a supportive, creative environment.By the end of the workshop, students will have a strong foundation in sewing and the confidence to continue exploring textile and fashion projects on their own.Ages:Recommended for ages 10+. I began teaching to help emerging creatives break the barrier of intimidation towards learning new mediums and technologies. Since 2023, I have been hosting beginner friendly workshops; teaching people how to use their sewing machines and create textile art that is both beautiful and functional. I believe sewing is one of the greatest skills to acquire and I look forward to teaching as many people in Philadelphia (and surrounding areas) how!Parking:Street Parking is MeteredThe Highland avenue parking lot behind Dunkin Doughnuts is also available for parking, if there is not closer street parking.About the Venue:Utility Works is a 7,500 sq. ft. art studio building located at 32 East Baltimore Ave. in Lansdowne, PA. Our Space is home to 23 artist studios, a hot-desk co-working area, a MakerSpace classroom, a ceramic studio, an art gallery, and a juice bar.Utility Works is operated by the LEDC (Lansdowne Economic Development Corporation), a 501(c)(3) dedicated to fostering a human-centered ecosystem by supporting small businesses, including brick-and-mortar stores, entrepreneurs, artists, and makers.
