Grain Painting - March 7

Maybe you’ve seen old doors or woodwork that have been painted with patterns that look similar to wood grain. This is grain painting! In the 1800s, grain-painted doors, woodwork, and furniture were prevalent in southeastern Pennsylvania as Swiss German immigrants strove to make their pine wood look “fancy”. In this workshop, you’ll learn how to do this dying art and leave with a finished 8×10 frame, handcrafted by a local Amish carpenter.

In addition, you’ll learn the fascinating history of what is known as the “fancy period” of furniture painting and see images from the 1800s that show the many directions this craft went. There will also be a framing demonstration and notes on how to do the finer points of framing.

Tuition includes all supplies for graining, plus a handmade, wooden, prepared frame that fits an 8×10 image. Participants will also be supplied with glass and hardware to frame a piece of their choosing at home.

Ages 13-100 and all ability levels are welcome.
