Addiction as a Response to Multi-Generational Trauma
We know that addiction “runs” in families. Now we are learning more about how addiction is frequently a response to multi-generational trauma and how we can treat addiction more effectively and deeply with tools to address multi-generational trauma.
In this experiential workshop, instructed by Karen Carnabucci, LCSW, TEP, we will explore the interplay of trauma within past generations and how it impacts anxiety, trauma and addiction in the present generation. The material is applicable to addictions of all kinds, including alcohol, prescription and street drugs, nicotine, sugar, pornography, hoarding and spending.
The very nature of addiction means that addicts are out of balance in mind, body and spirit. They have lost trust within their bodies and their bodies seemingly have betrayed them. The nervous system has been overwhelmed and the brain’s neurobiology has been distorted.
Special emphasis will focus on the emerging healing process of Family Constellations, which is beginning to make inroads in addiction treatment in the United States, although it is highly popular around the world.
Tapping into a “knowing field” that surrounds each family system allows the client and volunteer representatives to explore this living phenomenon. The client gains a unique perspective to make new choices or follow not-before-seen pathways, as he or she begins to Family Constellations occur with compassion, love and a movement towards balance.
In this training workshop, you will learn:
The basics of the generational transmission of trauma.
How the “Orders of Love” derived from Family Constellations can help pinpoint the origins of the trauma.
How social history questions can be adapted and expanded to gain information about possible ancestral trauma.
Activities that can inform, soothe and heal addicted and substance-abusing clients who have trauma in their ancestral family.
Presentation methods will include lecture, experiential activities and demonstration, group discussion and handouts. There will be ample time for questions, discussion and case consultation, as well as the option to address personal issues in a confidential atmosphere.
