This long-term field-trial is investigating how two nature-based strategies – enhanced rock weathering and microbial enrichment – each impact restoration efforts in both broadleaf and conifer forests. Enhanced weathering is a process that involves applying crushed silicate rock to the soil, while microbial enrichment is a method that introduces beneficial microorganisms from established forests to the soil.Started in late 2020, it is the largest study of its kind worldwide. Set across 11.5 hectares – equivalent to 18 football pitches – the study involves eight treatment combinations plus an unplanted grassland control, each of which is replicated eight times across the site. The result is 72 test cells and 25,600 trees, of which 6,400 are individually measured each year.On 3rd July we invite you to join us for a discussion on the lessons learned over the last five years, including trees, research techniques and community science. This is a great opportunity to learn more about this study.There will be a talk in our 'barn' with tea and coffee, following by a walk in some of the nearby research areas. We are trying to keep the carbon footprint of the project as low as possible, please consider this in your travel plans.What to bring (for the walk)The grasses are long and there are nettles in places, we strongly recommend long trousers, a long sleeved shirt, and a sun hatClean, sturdy footwear.
