Our biggest milestone yet, and our first measuring event since we published initial results in this June.Join us to learn new techniques and make a direct contribution to this exciting research program.Glandwr Forest Carbon StudyGlandwr Forest is an award-winning native broadleaf forest and home to the Carbon Community’s landmark carbon study which aims to help trees absorb more carbon from the atmosphere by accelerating tree growth and improving soil biodiversity. Designed together with leading scientists, this unique field trial studies two nature-based approaches, forest microbiome transplant and enhanced rock weathering. After the first four years, these techniques have been proven to boost tree growth and remove up to 27% more CO2 from the atmosphere in new broadleaf woodlands.You can watch our Scientific Advisory Board discuss the results in a recent webinar.Community ScienceCitizen science, sometimes called community science, is when people help scientists by taking measurements. During Big Tree Measure 2026, we will be measuring the Broadleaf trees in the Glandwr Forest Carbon Study, as well as in other research areas. Depending on the day, you may also have the opportunity to get involved in important work to help maintain the study's integrity.Sunday 11th October is our final day! Activities will include:🌳 Measuring diameter at base🌲 Measuring diameter at 1.3 metres📱 Recording the information🔨 Helping to maintain the integrity of the study on the ground✅ Helping with data qualityWe will work in pairs out in the field. Please note that all activities are physical and on uneven terrain. Activities are suitable for 16+. We are the first turning on the left over a small green bridge. You will see signs for The Glandwr Forest and Penlan at the bridge. Note that the driveway to our site is up a steep hill from the bridge. We are trying to keep the carbon footprint of the project as low as possible; please consider this in your travel plans.At the time of printing this, the Heart of Wales Line is running a replacement bus service for trains on Sunday 11th October. Cynghordy is a request stop; we will be happy to accommodate arrival/departure to fit in with the timetable. If you plan to arrive by train/bus, please let us know at info@carboncommunity.org, and we will send walking directions or arrange to collect you from the station.What to bringOur volunteering takes place outdoors; the grass is long and can remain wet with rain or morning dew. There are nettles in places.We strongly recommend long trousers, a long-sleeved shirt, plenty of layers, a pair of dry socks and a hat. Old clothes are recommended.Clean, sturdy footwear, ideally waterproof. Wellies can be useful! Please ensure the soles of footwear are clean.Sun protection, wind protection or rain protection depending on the day.Please bring a waterproof jacket, waterproof trousers, and gardening gloves.Safety glasses are required. The Carbon Community will provide safety glasses however if you have your own please feel free to bring them.A rucksack is also useful.If you normally carry an EpiPen for severe allergies, please bring it with you.Our indoor volunteer area is one room which includes an induction hob. If this is a risk to you, please let one of the supervisors know so we can make arrangements.Food & DrinksPlease bring a water bottle. We have treated spring water on site.The Carbon Community will provide hot drinks, snacks and a lunch suitable for vegetarians & vegans, with gluten free options.
