Wild Bird Photography at Kountze Lake - 3 Part workshop

Capture the grace, color, and character of wild birds in stunning detail!

Join Scott Dougherty for a 3-part workshop designed to elevate your bird photography skills from backyard feeders to the open field. Scott’s deep understanding of avian behavior and years of field experience make this the perfect opportunity to expand both your technical and artistic approach to wildlife photography.

This workshop will include an onsite photography session and be limited to 12 participants. We will discuss the important information and techniques of birding photography in the online lecture. The highlight of this workshop will be the hands-on session photographing wild birds at Kountze Lake in Lakewood. In the critique session you will receive feedback and see the photos from others which is a great learning experience.

‍Hands-on Workshop: Sunday March 1, 2026, 8:00AM – 11:00AM (MST)

(Make up date if needed due to weather: Saturday March 7)

Kountze Lake Belmar Park, Lakewood

‍Online Critique: Wednesday March 4, 2026, 6:30PM – 8:30PM (MST)

(Make up if hands on make up date is used., Wednesday March 11)

This will be a 2 hour lecture to help you set up your camera and plan to capture the best angles with the best lighting during the practical session of this workshop.

• Techniques to produce great bird photos
• How to prepare for taking photos in cold temperatures.
• How to photograph birds inflight
• The logistics of the hands-on workshop day.
• What lenses/focal lengths will work best for this workshop
• The best places to photograph specific birds
• How the direction of light enhances your photographs.
• Discuss the timing of birds nesting patterns

Part 2: Shooting Workshop:

Led by Mike’s Camera’s Scott Dougherty. You will have the opportunity to photograph wild birds at Kountze Lake. Scott will always be nearby to assist you with technical questions and provide hands-on instruction to ensure you execute best practices and capture the best shots possible

Part 3: Virtual Gallery and Critique:

We will wrap up the workshop with a fun and rewarding critique. We’ll review your best and not-so-great images from the shoot and share techniques that really worked, and those that were not as useful. You’ll be astonished by the immense variety of images that will have been captured and spend some time receiving positive and informative feedback.

About Your Instructor

Scott is the store manager of Mike’s Camera at Park Meadows. With over 30 years of experience in the photographic industry. He enjoys wildlife, macro and sports photography and especially likes photographing our home town Denver Broncos. He also has a key role in several of Mike’s Camera workshops. As a native Coloradoan, he lives in Littleton and loves to spend time outdoors Biking, Golfing or capturing photos of his five granddaughters.
