To begin a meditation practice, the usual instruction is to focus on one’s individual experience, i.e., mindfulness of breathing, understanding basic goodness, along with some initial attention to the
workings of our mind. As we enter Level 3, we are beginning to work with a larger vision toward an awareness of an openness or space in which all experience happens. This larger space includes the rest of the world. Warrior in the world begins to develop awareness of the process by which we can enter the world of others in a sane and gentle way.
Reflecting this larger vision, meditation instruction will emphasize a more expansive technique in which sense perceptions can be viewed as moments of awareness instead of obstacles to mindfulness. There could be more a sense of relaxation and resting the mind. Level III also places emphasis on postmeditation practice, e.g., walking meditation and meditation hall decorum as ways of tuning into our environment. The schedule for the weekend will comprise sitting meditation, three talks, group discussion, outside walks and interviews with the director.
