Join us at the monthly Puppetry Guild of Northeastern Ohio meeting for a hands-on, one-hour masterclass where you’ll learn the industry secrets behind creating world-class, Muppet-style characters. Whether you're a maker, an educator, or just a fan of the craft, this workshop will give you the tools to start your puppetry journey.

Participants will learn how to breathe life into original characters using the same fundamental techniques that made the Muppets world-famous. From character development and structural design to expressive movement, this session covers the essential journey from raw materials to a finished, performing puppet.

Key Learning Objectives

Materials & Anatomy: Discover the industry secrets of puppet construction. We will explore the use of Nylon fleece (often called "Muppet Fleece") for a seamless look and explore the current available materials that are readily purchasable for those on a budget, reticulated and closed celled foam for lightweight structural integrity, and 3D-printed or plastic components for expressive eyes and features.

The "Henson Stitch": Master the proper method of hand stitching. You will be guided through the specific whip-stitch and ladder-stitch techniques used to hide seams, ensuring your puppet looks like a single, continuous piece of fabric rather than a sewn toy.

Mouth/Rod & Hand Integration: Learn the mechanics of internal mouth plates for expression and crisp speech and the installation of arm rods/hand armature. We will cover how to install and balance the hand style and size as we. als the length of rods to allow for fluid, lifelike gestures and "arm-synching" that matches the puppet’s personality.

Manipulation & Performance: A puppet is only as good as its performer. The workshop concludes with a basic introduction to "monitor puppetry," focusing on eye-line, lip-syncing, and the subtle tilts that convey emotion.

What’s Included

A one hour demonstration of basic construction and character development and manipulation techniques

Sewing kits with one needle, two fabric scraps, heavy-duty upholstery thread. (For demonstration/practice of stitching only - please return)

Template pattern for a very basic hand puppet shape.
