- **Event Description**: Helping New Drivers Navigate a Changing Street Environment

If you’ve spent any time on Lakewood’s streets lately, you’ve probably noticed things are changing.

New bike lanes. Updated intersections. More people choosing to walk or bike for everyday trips.

With those changes can come uncertainty—especially for new and soon-to-be drivers who are still learning how to navigate real-world situations behind the wheel.

Questions like:

Why is that bicyclist in the middle of the road?
Am I allowed to drive in a bike lane to turn?
What do I do at intersections with people crossing, biking, and driving all at once?
These moments of uncertainty aren’t just frustrating—they’re where many crashes begin.

That’s why we’re excited to offer a Bicycle and Pedestrian Friendly Driver Class for Lakewood students.

This interactive session is designed to help new drivers better understand how to safely share the road with people biking and walking. Using real examples from Lakewood streets, the class focuses on practical, everyday situations—like navigating bike lanes, passing safely, and understanding how different road users interact at intersections.

The goal is simple: reduce confusion, build confidence, and help young drivers make safer decisions behind the wheel.

Because most crashes aren’t caused by bad people—they’re caused by small decisions made quickly, often without full awareness. The good news is that awareness is something we can build.

This class will be taught by Emily Lindberg, a Lakewood resident and certified League Cycling Instructor through the League of American Bicyclists. It is part of ongoing efforts to support safer streets in Lakewood by improving understanding between all road users. When drivers know what to expect—and how to respond—everyone benefits.

If you have a student who is driving or preparing to drive, we hope they’ll join us.
