- **Event Description**: The process of caring for the land and making sure it keeps its natural integrity for future generations is known as Stewardship. The Stewards of Chikaming Open Lands (COL) practice a wide variety of stewardship techniques to help maintain the natural integrity. Join the Harbor Country Hikers and our hike leaders David & Susan Eblen, long time volunteers at COL, as they tell us what it means to be a Steward while leading us through the Merritt Family and Younger Family Preserves. By the way, Dave and Susan are the Stewards of these Preserves.

The Merritt Family and Younger Family Preserves protect 60 acres of forest and wetland, and consist of two contiguous preserves. Although at first glance this looks like one big, monotypic forest, it actually represents two forest types in various stages of regrowth, including a mesic (or moist) southern forest and southern hardwood swamp.

HCH has an All-Terrain Rollator which may be reserved for use on our hikes. Reservations are made on a first-come first-served basis by filling out the brief form at <https:>.

In the case of inclement weather, check out <www.harborcountryhikers.org> or <fb.com> the day of hike for cancellation/ rescheduling notice. Wear long pants (preferably tucked-in), a sun hat, sturdy shoes or boots and insect repellent and bring plenty of water. Depending on the weather, there may be some muddy areas.
