On Good Friday in 1937, Jesus appeared to Sister Faustina, a Polish nun, requesting that she make a special 9 Day Novena starting on Good Friday and ending on the first Sunday after Easter. This novena is offered for the blood and water which gushed forth from the side of Jesus when He was on the cross. Jesus also instructed her to make an image of Him to be venerated with the words “Jesus I Trust In You”, and the Sunday after Easter is now known as Divine Mercy Sunday. In April, 1991, Pope John Paul II’s Easter message focused on this devotion saying: “Divine Mercy is the answer to the world’s problems.”
