Bookish: The Hate You Give by Angie Thomas
October’s Bookish pick, chosen by our teen book club members, is Angie Thomas’s outstanding debut novel The Hate U Give.
The Hate U Give tells the story of Starr - a sixteen year old girl who is torn between two worlds. Every day she walks between the poor neighbourhood where she was born and raised, and the fancy suburbs where she attends high school. The uneasy balance between both her worlds gets completely shattered when Starr witnesses the fatal shooting and M**der of her childhood best friend - Khalil at the hands of a police officer one night.
As the story unfolds, Khalil’s case becomes a disruptive national issue. When the pressure keeps rising, Starr must use the only powerful weapon she has - her voice to fight for justice. But how she uses it could simply put an end to her two worlds and, her life!
Whether you’ve read the book or seen the movie, come join like-minded teens to give us your take on this chilling tale by one of the world’s most creative storytellers - over some snacks of course.
