- **Event Description**: Unproud by Gabby Chavez
Directed by Sylvia Cervantes Blush

After a 7.5 magnitude earthquake destroys their home in Guatemala, Maite and her 3 younger brothers must navigate a new life in the U.S. As she struggles to adjust to the new language, financial stress, and threat of I.C.E., Maite realizes that the American Dream isn’t at all what she thought it would be. She will have to decide whether she keeps shielding her brothers from the truth, or if she will let their picture-perfect image of the U.S. crumble. Inspired by the immigration story of the playwright's own family, Unproud sheds light on the kinds of sacrifices many have made to call this country home.

See Unproud in the 2026 EMBARK festival at No Square Theatre in Laguna Beach - a weekend of bold, exciting new work from the dramatists in OCPA's emerging playwrights cohort.

EMBARK, created by Baylee Shlichtman and facilitated by AJ Layague, is a pay-what-you-can new play festival produced each October by the Orange County Playwrights Alliance, presented at No Square Theatre in the heart of Laguna Beach.
