While many people are aware of the impact of the Wabash Erie Canal on the development of Lafayette and Tippecanoe County in the late 1840’s and 1850’s, it really was the advent of the railroad that cemented Lafayette’s sometimes questionable survival firmly in place as a growing and thriving community. Just as the Interstate highways today connect Tippecanoe County to the rest of the country, in the 1860’s it was the steel rails that made markets beyond Indiana available all-year round for Tippecanoe County farms and businesses. Come hear how the railroad boom changed the lives of Tippecanoe County citizens forever and assured Lafayette’s permanent place in Indiana’s history books.
