In Alfred Hitchcock’s 1963 adaptation of Daphne du Maurier’s short story The Birds, Melanie Daniels (Tippi Hedren), beautiful blonde socialite and incorrigible flirt, follows eligible bachelor Mitch Brenner (Rod Taylor) to his family home in sunny Bodega Bay, California. The stage seems set for Melanie to turn a meet-cute into much more. Still, she must first contend with the judgments and expectations of Mitch’s overbearing mother Lydia (Jessica Tandy) and former flame Annie Hayworth (Suzanne Pleshette). As if that weren’t enough drama, the quaint bayside town is suddenly beset by an avian menace of dizzying proportions. Why are the birds suddenly attacking everyone? How did the birds organize so well across species? What can we learn from them for our unionizing efforts? So many questions, so few answers. Underappreciated in its time, THE BIRDS has gone on to be revered for its subtextual richness, genre-defining tropes, and iconic special effects. But how is it queer? Let’s be honest, birds are queer. We’ve said it once, we’ll say it again: if it’s got feathers and a cloaca, we’re claiming it for the LGBTQ+ crew. Beyond that, the film is replete with queer-coded characters and elements, from the salty old ornithologist to Mitch’s spookily codependent relationship with his mother. Part romcom, part disaster film, part apocalyptic thriller, THE BIRDS is a campy masterpiece perfect for summer viewing during the end of the world. Cheep cheep, my feathered friends, we fly at dawn.
