The running joke: we had the best-read prisoners in Colorado. By 1975, the library moved to its current home at 310 S. Main St. Built through community vision and donations, it has grown through major renovations in 1978, 1986, and 2006, and continues to thrive because of steadfast local support. A New Chapter After more than a year of planning, fundraising, and community support, the library has closed on the purchase of the former La Veta Elementary School at 109 E. Garland Avenue. The $250,000 acquisition was funded through $150,000 in library reserves and a $100,000 contribution from the La Veta Cuchara Foundation. The new East Branch will serve as a true center for learning and community. Program attendance has grown steadily, the meeting room is in constant demand, and the beloved Library of Things continues to expand. A community garden is also planned. CHFA has pledged $20,000 toward Phase One, bringing funds in hand to $60,000. Just $40,000 remains to reopen the playground, one of the community's most consistent requests.
