Event Overview
The Chefs de Cuisine Association of San Diego is delighted to announce that Gourmet Foods International will sponsor the April 2026 General Meeting. This event will feature a special presentation on Korean BBQ, led by a mystery chef whose identity will be revealed soon. Attendees can look forward to an engaging culinary experience, including live cooking demonstrations on the grill and tastings of selected menu items, which will be finalized in early April. Additionally, a brief history of Korean BBQ is provided below to enrich the experience.

Please note that this is a professional gathering designed for chefs and restaurant owners. Culinary enthusiasts are welcome to join, and student culinarians are especially encouraged to participate either as attendees or volunteers. The number of volunteers may vary each month, so it is important to confirm your status with Chef David Chenelle at cheflegere@Gmail.com. Culinary student volunteers receive complimentary admission as recognition for their invaluable contributions.

Answer: Korean BBQ: A Communal Culinary Experience

Traditionally, Korean BBQ, locally known as gogi-gui (meat roast), is a popular communal dining experience where diners grill various cuts of meat—typically beef, pork, or chicken—on gas or charcoal grills built directly into the table. It is more than just a meal; it is a social event focused on togetherness, often accompanied by a vast array of small side dishes called banchan. In San Diego there are several restaurants that feature this style of service.

A typical Korean BBQ feast consists of several essential elements:

The Meat : Includes popular marinated options like bulgogi (thinly sliced beef) and galbi (short ribs), as well as unmarinated favorites like samgyeopsal (pork belly) and chadolbagi (thinly sliced brisket).
Banchan (Side Dishes) : Small, refillable plates of fermented or seasoned vegetables. The most iconic is kimchi (spicy fermented cabbage), but other common sides include pickled radish, seasoned bean sprouts, and steamed eggs.
Ssam (The Wrap) : A traditional way to eat the grilled meat is by wrapping it in fresh lettuce or perilla leaves.
Sauces &amp; Dips :
Ssamjang : A thick, savory, and slightly spicy paste made from fermented soybean and chili.
Gireum-jang : A simple dip made of sesame oil, salt, and black pepper, perfect for unmarinated meats.

The Chef will prepare this on BBQ grills outside and bring it inside for us to sample and enjoy.
If you do not have the time to attend the general meeting then show up and take a to-go box home. Normal member &amp; nonmember fee applies. Pick up times are 6:00 PM.
