- **Event Description**: Anne Hills and the Power of a Listening Room

There are some artists who can change a room. Anne Hills belongs firmly in that category.

As I talked with Anne recently, what struck me most was not just her history, though there is plenty of that, nor even the beauty of her voice, though that has been unmistakable for a long time. What struck me was how seriously she takes the exchange between artist and audience. For Anne, a concert is not something delivered to people. It is something created with them.

When I asked how she would describe her live show, she did not rush to summarize herself. Instead, she talked about what she hopes people carry away. Storytelling. Emotional connection. Beauty. That feels exactly right. Anne does not approach songs as display pieces. She approaches them as vessels that can move people, comfort people, and sometimes nudge them toward a deeper awareness of themselves and the world around them.

That is one reason her songs stay with people.

Anne spoke beautifully about what makes a song endure. The songs that last, she said, are songs with purpose. They may make us laugh, make us cry, help us remember, or carry us into a changed emotional state, but they do something. Even clever songs that survive do so because they truly entertain, not just because they are smart. The best songs build humanity. They deepen our awareness of who we are in the universe and how we belong to one another.

That way of thinking runs all through Anne’s work.

She also put words to something I have been trying to understand about folk music itself. She said that while other kinds of music may move people emotionally, folk music often moves them socially, politically, and communally. These are work songs, she said, not necessarily in the old labor-song sense, but in the sense that they help us work on our world. They raise questions, comfort people in struggle, and help shift the social conscience. I loved that. And then she gave me a line I do not think I will forget: Pop is “me” music. Folk music is “we” music.

That may be the simplest and best explanation of the difference I have ever heard.

Anne is also very clear about where this music works best. We talked about the difference between concert halls, festivals, and intimate listening spaces, and she did not hesitate. She prefers the smaller room. She likes to see people’s faces. She does not want to sing into darkness. She wants to know who is there, what they are bringing with them, and how their presence is shaping the evening. She believes each person in the room changes the show, and I believe she is right.

When I asked what she would want people to know before they come, her answer was simple and moving. She said she wants them to know that they matter to her, and that their being in the audience will change the show. That is not promotional language. That is an artistic philosophy. It is also one reason a room like Wesley’s Place feels like such a natural fit for her.

We also talked about this season of her life and career. Anne is not traveling as much as she once did, and that makes each concert more intentional. She said that sometimes she drives across the country simply to be in a community that has supported her over the years. She wants to see how people are doing. She wants to ask about their lives. That says a great deal about the kind of artist she is. For Anne, this work has always been relational. Music is not just repertoire. It is a way of staying in touch with people and with the shared human concerns that first drew her to folk music.

Her thoughts on collaboration were just as revealing. She said that when working with other great songwriters and musicians, it was important to bring a thoughtful confidence, to know why you are advocating for a certain phrase, idea, etc. But also, bring curiosity and humility, you want their ideas or you wouldn't be writing with them.. That feels true not just of collaboration, but of her presence onstage. There is no strain in it. No performance of certainty. Just a grounded confidence shaped by years of listening, learning, and showing up fully.

I came away from our conversation thinking that Anne Hills is still doing what the best folk artists have always done. She is helping people feel less alone. She is offering songs that can comfort, challenge, and lift. And she is doing it with a voice that remains clear, generous, and deeply human.

I am very glad she is coming to Wesley’s Place. And I think the room will be different because she is here.
