When loss occurs in the workplace — through layoffs, burnout, moral injury, discrimination, program cuts, health changes or transitions we did not choose — it can profoundly disrupt our sense of meaning and wholeness. This workshop is not focused on grief in relation to death and bereavement. Rather, it invites us to name and honor forms of grief in the workplace that often go unrecognized: the loss of identity, community, confidence, vocation or connection to a mission that once felt life-giving. Grounded in grief theory, reflective practice and spiritual inquiry, the session creates a compassionate space to explore how work-related loss affects the inner life, as well as how meaning, resilience and growth can emerge alongside grief. Special attention is given to losses that are "disenfranchised": losses that often are not socially validated, such as losing part of oneself, losing faith in an institution or losing a sense of purpose after organizational change. Through her company, JVD Consulting, she helps strengthen workplace cultures and empowers leaders to claim clarity and courage at all stages of career, with an emphasis on values, social impact and creating inclusive communities. Erica G. Srinivasan is an associate professor of psychology at University of Wisconsin–La Crosse, where she also serves as the director for the Center for Grief and Death Education and is co-chair for the Gerontology Emphasis. Additionally, she is the lead instructor in the University of Wisconsin–Madison’s Grief Support Specialist Certificate Program. She conducts research on grief and loss, medical-in-dying, dementia and death education.
