6PM: The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension (1984), Directed by W.D. Richter, Rated PG

In this fan favorite sci-fi comedy, Peter Weller (Robocop) plays Buckaroo Banzai, a modern renaissance man: test pilot, brain surgeon, theoretical scientist, comic book hero and last but not least, famous rock star, there’s nothing Banzai can’t do. Together with his team of eclectic crime-fighters known as the Hong Kong Cavaliers, Banzai travels the world touting his reality-bending breakthroughs while stopping off for the occasional underground live show.
Directed by W.D. Richter (writer of Big Trouble in Little China), Buckaroo Banzai was originally inspired by the “Doc Savage” magazine serials of the 1940s and 50s. However, unlike other genre homage films of the 1980s, Buckaroo takes its general premise to Thomas Pynchon levels of absurdity. Deadpan humor abounds as the film’s star-studded cast does their best to deliver lines like “Big Booty, you carry my overthruster!” while maintaining a straight face. And although Buckaroo Banzai was a box office bomb upon release, the film’s fandom has only grown in the 42 years since its debut, with Banzai references making appearances in everything from Star Trek: Deep Space Nine to Wes Anderson’s The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou to Steven Spielberg’s Ready Player One. A true cult classic if ever there was one.
Featuring an absolutely stacked cast that includes not only Weller and Lithgow, but also Jeff Goldblum, Ellen Barkin, Clancy Brown and Christopher Lloyd, Buckaroo Banzai is the kind of geeky left-field comedy adventure that appeals to the best in us all…even if the plot might be hard to describe to your friends!

8PM: Streets of Fire (1984), Directed by Walter Hill, Rated PG

Another place, another time…a rock ‘n roll fable like none other! In this action / music / western mashup, psychotic gangland leader Raven (Willem Davoe, in a scene-stealing performance) kidnaps his latest obsession, popstar Ellen Aim (Diane Lane), whisking her out of her home district of the Richmond and hiding her away amongst the biker gangs of his home turf, the Battery.

Written and directed by beloved filmmaker Walter Hill (The Warriors, 48 Hrs. Last Man Standing), Streets of Fire is a neon-drenched alternate world pop-rock tale with a pulse and style distinctly its own. Simply put, there are few films like it. And like Buckaroo Banzai, the film was a financial disappointment upon release, only to find new life thanks to the emerging VHS market and a soundtrack that is arguably more famous than the film itself…at least in America. In Japan, on the other hand, the film was a massive success, where it won the prestigious Kinema Junpo Award for Best Foreign Language Feature, as well as serving as a main inspiration for a long string of anime and live-action television series, including Bubblegum Crisis, AD Police Files, and Akira, to name but a few.
