Others aided the war effort by fundraising and working with organizations like the U.S. Sanitary Commission and the Christian Commission, or by serving as nurses who provided care and encouragement to soldiers. Some women took on unconventional roles as spies or disguised
themselves as men to fight. Through these varied efforts, the war allowed women to step beyond traditional roles. Their experiences during those four years shaped their lives, and the story of the Civil War is incomplete without acknowledging their
contributions.
