1950年代からロサンゼルスを拠点に活動する現代アーティスト、エド・ルシェ（Ed Ruscha）は、1966年から電動カメラを搭載した車でサンセット大通りを撮影し続け、その記録は現在ゲティ研究所に所蔵される約90万枚の包括的アーカイブとなっています。この資料をもとに、デジタル人文学や文化地理学、建築、美術史などを横断して研究成果をまとめた出版物「Ed Ruscha’s Streets of Los Angeles: Artist, Image, Archive, City」が刊行されました。

編集者であるピュー氏は、建築とそのメディア（写真・映画・模型など）を中心に、近年は建築史や美術史におけるコンピュテーション、デジタルメディア、インフラの役割を研究してきました。物理資料のデジタル化、3Dスキャン、コンピュータビジョン、メタデータやワークフロー設計などの実践にも携わっています。

本レクチャーでは、都市空間を文化生産や芸術表現、コミュニティ形成の場としていかに読み解けるか、また、膨大なアーカイブを評価するうえでデジタル技術がどのような可能性を拓くのかを伺います。

KYOTO Design Lab is pleased to host a public lecture titled City as Image: Ed Ruscha’s Streets of Los Angeles Archive by Emily Pugh, Principal Research Specialist at the Getty Research Institute.

Since the 1950s, Ed Ruscha—one of the leading contemporary American artists based in Los Angeles—has been documenting Sunset Boulevard. Beginning in 1966, he drove a car equipped with a motorized camera to photograph the street, producing a record that now comprises approximately 900,000 images housed at the Getty Research Institute. These materials form the basis for the digital publication Ed Ruscha’s Streets of Los Angeles: Artist, Image, Archive, City, which brings together interdisciplinary research spanning digital humanities, cultural geography, architecture, art history, photography, and visual culture.

As editor of the publication, Pugh has long been interested in architecture and its media—such as photography, film, and physical models—and her recent work examines the roles of computation, digital media, and infrastructural systems in architectural and art historical research. Her work includes the digitization of physical materials, 3D scanning, computer vision, and the development of metadata and workflows for cultural collections.

This lecture will reflect on how urban space can be understood as a site of cultural production, artistic expression, and community formation, and consider the possibilities that digital technologies open up for interpreting and engaging with large-scale archives.
