His job market paper, Do Monitors Induce Pressure? Mutual Fund Transparency and Financial Reporting Quality, examines how the SEC’s move to accelerate mutual fund portfolio disclosure reshaped investor incentive horizons and unintentionally increased earnings management in portfolio firms. His findings highlight how well-intentioned transparency policies intended to enhance information quality at the intermediary level can impose short-term pressures that weaken portfolio firm reporting quality.More broadly, his research studies how regulation, uncertainty, and digital communication technologies alter institutional investors’ information environments and affect both firm behavior and investor welfare. His coauthored paper, Social Media Livestreaming: Investor Information or Persuasion?, studies mutual fund livestreams and shows that these events function primarily as persuasive marketing rather than investor education.His work has been supported by the Hong Kong Research Grants Council and presented at the American Accounting Association’s FARS Midyear Meeting, Asian Bureau of Finance & Economic Research (ABFER) webinar, Conference on FinTech Advances in Emerging Markets, and Stanford University. He earned his MSc in Accounting from HKUST and his BSc from the University of Southern California and was a Visiting Scholar at Duke University in Fall 2025.Abstract: Using a difference-in-differences design around the SEC’s 2004 regulation increasing mutual fund portfolio disclosure frequency from semi-annual to quarterly, I study whether the resulting shift in investor incentive horizons affects accruals earnings management (AEM) in portfolio firms. I provide evidence that institutional investors, typically viewed as monitors of financial reporting quality, can encourage financial statement manipulation when their own incentives become short term. I find that firms with greater ownership by affected mutual funds exhibit higher levels of AEM post regulation. Mechanism tests reveal that this pressure is transmitted through the threat of exit, providing novel evidence that exit threats can reduce financial reporting quality. Other cross-sectional tests show that the effect is stronger among firms owned by funds with lower-skill managers, consistent with greater career concerns under increased scrutiny. The effect is also concentrated among firms with higher ownership by transient and growth-oriented institutional investors. I further find that treated firms receive more going concern opinions, have more internal control deficiencies, higher material impairment, more out-of-period adjustments, and more frequent restatements, indicating a broader deterioration in financial reporting quality.
