It shows that tighter monetary policy widens credit spreads, particularly for short-term and lower-rated (riskier) debt, while longer-term spreads are comparatively less sensitive. The effects of policy shocks are persistent over time, indicating a sustained impact on corporate financing conditions. By linking monetary policy shocks to the term structure of credit spreads, the analysis highlights how policy transmission operates unevenly across maturities and risk classes, with stronger effects on firms facing greater credit risk.Speaker’s BioMarti G. Subrahmanyam is the Charles E. Merrill Professor of Finance, Economics and International Business at the New York University Stern School of Business, and Global Network Professor of Finance and Economics at New York University Shanghai. He holds a B.Tech in mechanical engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras, a postgraduate diploma in business administration from the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad, and a Ph.D. in finance and economics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.Professor Subrahmanyam’s research spans corporate finance, asset pricing, derivatives markets, market microstructure and fixed-income markets. He has authored more than 150 scholarly articles and several books, with his work published in top journals including Econometrica, The Journal of Finance, Journal of Financial Economics and The Review of Financial Studies. A distinguished educator and mentor, he has taught across undergraduate, graduate and executive programs worldwide, chaired numerous doctoral committees, and founded honors programs at NYU.
