Since 1999 he has worked around the world as a foreign correspondent for The Wall Street Journal, and since 2018 he has served as the newspaper’s chief foreign-affairs correspondent. Born in Kyiv, Ukraine, he was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in International Reporting in 2022 (for coverage from Afghanistan) and 2023 (for coverage from Ukraine). In 2024, he received the National Press Club Award for political analysis. His latest non-fiction book, Our Enemies Will Vanish, was a finalist for the Orwell Prize 2024 and won the Peterson Literary Prize 2024. Trofimov’s novel, No Country for Love, based on the history of his family in 20th-century Ukraine, has been translated into five European languages. Yaroslav completed his master’s degree at New York University and currently lives in Dubai.
