My, niewinni czarodzieje. Wystawa konkursowa Fundacji Grey House

Szukajmy ich, by otruć własne swe nadzieje"
Wejście do piwnicy zawsze prowadzi w dół, schodzi się tam niepewnie, trochę tak jak Orfeusz do podziemi. Jest brudno. Ciemno. W powietrzu unosi się zapach wilgotnej ziemi. Po długiej nieobecności wyczuwalna jest też stęchlizna. Piwnica to miejsce, które jak pisał Gaston Bachelard, tak jak strych wyznacza oś domu onirycznego i staje się schronieniem dla wspomnień, archetypicznych lęków i zapomnianych traum. Wstydu, ale też resztek: tego co niepotrzebne i tego co stało się naddatkiem. To składzik śmieci, takich, które mają się jeszcze kiedyś komuś przydać i spiżarnia pełna zapasów. Bachelard pisał: „Wszystko nabiera wówczas cech symbolu. Zstępować w zadumie w świat głębokości – to zarazem zstępować w głąb nas samych”. Wtórował mu Jung, który twierdził, że schodząc do piwnicy wkraczamy w „świat człowieka pierwotnego we mnie, do którego świadomość nie sięgała i którego nie mogła rozjaśnić”. Zresztą zdaje się, że podobne zdanie o piwnicy miał Freud – miała być ona metaforą nieświadomości, magazynem popędów i rozerotyzowaną dziurą przez którą widać wyparte. To tu cały ten egzystencjalno-metafizyczny syf jak szampo nagle wybijał na powierzchnię. Tę irracjonalność zbiorowego fantazmatu rozbija dopiero myśl Deleuze. W skrócie: w tej piwnicy nic nie ma, ale jednocześnie w piwnicy możesz zobaczyć wszystko. To miejsce produkcji pragnienia, podziemny system kłącz, związek mikropolityki z ciałem i wreszcie maszyna wypluwająca potencjał subwersji, która kryje się „pod skórą”, tego samego domu, w strukturze jego fundamentów. W miejscu, które w każdym momencie może je rozsadzić.
W filmie Kusturicy o wieloznacznym tytule „Underground” z początku piwnica jest tylko tymczasowym lokum, schronieniem przed wojną i katastrofą, które z czasem, wobec tego, że na skutek intrygi wojna nigdy się dla jej mieszkańców nie kończy, staje się domem. Nawet jeśli jak chce Bachelard dom, w którym się śni i który pojawia się w snach to dwie różne rzeczy. Jest jedyną dostępną rzeczywistością, w której już się nie rekonstruuje znanego świata, ale właśnie stwarza się go na nowo. Nawet jeśli piwnica to miejsce, gdzie jak w platońskiej jaskini, ma się do czynienia z mitami i narzuconymi z zewnątrz wyobrażeniami, w którym widzi się tylko cienie i odbicia, gdzie mało co się wie, a wszystko się jedynie przeczuwa.
Wystawa konkursowa w Fundacji Grey House to próba rekonstrukcji prowizorycznego domu, ale też opowieść o przestrzeni totalnego zamknięcia, które paradoksalnie, jak chce Bataille, może stać się miejscem radykalnego otwarcia. Innymi słowy to historia o tym, że pragnienie nie siedzi potulnie w piwnicy. Ono się tam buntuje. Tytuł wystawy nawiązuje do filmu w reż. Andrzeja Wajdy z 1960 roku - melodramatu o codzienności młodych ludzi, jazzowym undergroundzie PRL i piwniczno-kawiarnianym życiu, ale też do „Dziadów” Adama Mickiewicza. Konkretnie monologu Dziewicy, której słowa są lustrzanym odbiciem romantycznych idei Gustawa – kochanka, który ginie samobójczą śmiercią i ducha, który wychodzi, omen nomen, z piwnicy.
Podczas wernisażu ogłoszone zostaną wyniki II etapu 13 edycji konkursu dla młodych osób artystycznych Fundacji Grey House.

"Welcome, O cave – eternally enclosed,
Let us learn to become prisoners by our own will –
Do we not find occupations? The sages of old
Would lock themselves away seeking treasures, medicines,
And poisons – we, the innocent young sorcerers,
Shall seek them too, to poison our own hopes."
The basement always leads downward, descending uncertainly, much like Orpheus into the underworld. It is dark, dirty, and filled with the scent of damp earth; after a long absence, there is also the mustiness of time. As Gaston Bachelard wrote, the basement, like the attic, forms the axis of the dream-house and becomes a refuge for memories, archetypal fears, and forgotten traumas—of shame, but also of remnants: the unnecessary and the surplus. It is at once a storeroom of discarded objects, waiting perhaps to be useful one day, and a pantry of reserves. Bachelard observed: “Everything then takes on the quality of a symbol. To descend contemplatively into the world of depths is simultaneously to descend into ourselves.” Jung echoed this, suggesting that entering the basement leads us into the “world of the primitive man within me, which consciousness could not reach or illuminate.” Freud also saw the basement as a metaphor for the unconscious, a repository of drives, and an erotically charged space revealing the repressed. Here, existential and metaphysical detritus suddenly surfaces. Deleuze’s thought alone disrupts this irrational collective phantasm. In short: in this basement there is nothing, yet within it, one can see everything. It is a site of desire production, an underground network of rhizomes, a nexus of micropolitics and the body, and a machine expelling the potential for subversion, hidden “under the skin” of the house, within the very structure of its foundations, ready to rupture them at any moment.
In Kusturica’s ambiguously titled film Underground, the basement initially serves as a temporary refuge from war and catastrophe, but over time—because the war never truly ends for its inhabitants—it becomes a home. Even if, as Bachelard notes, the house we dream in and the house appearing in dreams are not the same, it is the only reality in which the familiar world is not reconstructed but newly created. Even if the basement functions like Plato’s cave, a place of myths and imposed external images, seeing only shadows and reflections, knowing little but sensing everything.
The Grey House Foundation competition exhibition reconstructs a provisional home while telling the story of a space of total enclosure that, paradoxically, as Bataille suggests, can become a site of radical openness. In other words, desire does not sit quietly in the basement—it rebels there. The exhibition title evokes Andrzej Wajda’s 1960 film, a melodrama of youth, the jazz underground of the Polish People’s Republic, and basement-café culture, but also Adam Mickiewicz’s Forefathers’ Eve, specifically the Virgin’s monologue, whose words mirror the romantic ideals of Gustaw—the lover who dies by suicide—and the spirit emerging, omen-nomen, from the basement.
