Gro tvorí expresívna maľba s výraznými textovými prvkami a silným rukopisom kombinujúcim všetky médiá. OMARA začala tvoriť vo veku 43 rokov, po smrti svojej matky a v súvislosti so zdravotnými problémami. Bez formálneho umeleckého vzdelania vytvorila autentické dielo, ktoré predstavuje významné svedectvo o živote, identite a sociálnych vzťahoch v spoločnosti z pohľadu rómskej ženy počas druhej polovice 20. storočia. Dnes patrí medzi najrenomovanejšie a najvystavovanejšie rómske umelkyne na medzinárodnej umeleckej scéne a jej diela sú zastúpené vo významných svetových inštitúciách. Výstavná dramaturgia predstaví návštevníctvu rôzne vrstvy jej tvorby a života. Cez fotografie a nový krátky film od maďarského režiséra Abela Santa (2024) bude možné vidieť útržky z jej života, počas ktorého veštila aj v televízii. Veštecká architektonická koncepcia vychádza jednak z tohoto faktu, jednak reaguje na kurátorské výklady, ktoré sa dostávajú do rovín metatextov a zámerne neinterpretujú a nevykladajú jednotlivé diela len kunsthistoricky ale ponúkajú experimentálnejšie spektrum významov. Pre autorku bolo kľúčové, že sa presťahovala do dedinky Szarvasgede, kde mala vlastný drevený dom s bazénom, ktorý si upravila podľa svojich predstáv. Ako obyvateľka menšiny čelila nenávisti a odsudzovaniu, ktoré však humorom a energiou aj celkovým prístupom dokázala odvážne prekonávať. Vedela presne, čo chce aj nechce a jej živelnosť bola priam magnetická. V niektorých svojich výstavách doslova aj žila a bolo možné zažiť komentovanú prehliadku o štvrtej ráno. Pohľad do jej kultúry, filozofie a nezabudnuteľného štýlu v tvorbe aj v živote je veľmi silný a má v sebe aj jasné prvky aktivizmu (chodievala do ženských väzníc). Významným medzníkom jej života bola aj operácia oka v roku 1991, po ktorej vznikli prvé kresby počas jej rekonvalescencie. Nasledovalo založenie Galérie Mara v roku 1993 a následné medzinárodné uznanie v rokoch 2004 - 2009, počas ktorých vystavovala v Budapešti (Ludwig Museum), Benátkach (Rómsky pavilón na bienále) či Viedni (Kunsthalle). Jej etablovanie sa na medzinárodnej umeleckej scéne ďalej stúpa (RomaMoMA, ERIAC, Victoria Albert Hall, Tate). Hlavná časť výstavy prezentuje maliarsku tvorbu od raných experimentov až po posledné diela. Začínala kresbami a maľbami inšpirovanými bolesťami hlavy, pokračuje cez portréty jej jedinej dcéry a autoportréty, motívy domu, ktorý si postavila až po reakcie na práva žien a Rómov. Ukazuje aj experimentovanie s rôznymi technikami a formátmi. Osobitná pozornosť je venovaná tzv. modrému obdobiu (1997-2010), pre ktoré sú charakteristické už aj diela s textovými komentármi. Okrem tejto série sú výrazné aj “červené” maľby. Špecifickou súčasťou tvorby sú miniatúry (2000-2020) - kolekcia malieb na netradičných materiáloch ako sú škatuľky od cigariet a zápaliek a drievka používané na vypínanie plátna. Vo všetkých zachytávajú svoje životné míľniky, materstvo a sociálne témy. Okrem týchto tém zachytáva aj klasické pohľady do krajiny, kvety a stromy (séria Tancujúce stromy). Vizuál aj názov výstavy Toto vidím cez zadné okno pri západe slnka, vychádza priamo z textu jedného z takýchto obrazov a zároveň viac významovo odkazuje aj na jej operáciu oka a veštenie budúcnosti. Srdce výstavy predstavuje unikátny súbor 22 autorských tarotových kariet, ktoré si sama vytvorila a aj používala počas veštenia v televízii (boli vydané ako príloha pre ženský časopis). Sada kariet obsahuje klasické motívy zo života a je doplnená vysvetľujúcimi textami k symbolike jednotlivých kariet. V rámci zdôraznenia tohto rozmeru jej tvorby boli vytvorené aj ich zväčšeniny a celá architektúra vychádza z reálneho výkladu kariet, ktorý diváctvu umožní nečakané "čítania", výklady a interpretácie jej diel aj celej expozície. Súčasťou je aj autentická nahrávka z televízneho programu, počas ktorého OMARA veští ľuďom, ktorí telefonujú. Divák sa ocitá vo vizuálne strhujúcom a pestrofarebnom svete plnom jej silných životných statementov. Expozíciu dopĺňa aj hudba, ktorú mala Omara rada (napr. Karel Gott, Engelbart Humperdinck) a vôňa mentolových cigár, ktoré fajčila. At its core is expressive painting with strong textual elements and a powerful personal handwriting that combines multiple media. OMARA began creating art at the age of 43, following the death of her mother and in connection with health issues. Without formal artistic education, she produced an authentic body of work that constitutes an important testimony to life, identity, and social relationships in society from the perspective of a Roma woman in the second half of the 20th century. Today, she is among the most renowned and frequently exhibited Roma artists on the international art scene, and her works are represented in major institutions worldwide. The exhibition dramaturgy introduces visitors to various layers of her work and life. Through photographs and a new short film by Hungarian director Ábel Santa (2024), visitors will see fragments of her life, during which she also worked as a fortune-teller on television. The fortune-telling–inspired architectural concept draws both on this fact and on curatorial interpretations that move into the realm of metatexts and deliberately refrain from purely art-historical explanations of individual works, instead offering a more experimental spectrum of meanings. A key moment for the artist was her move to the village of Szarvasgede, where she lived in her own wooden house with a swimming pool, which she adapted to her own vision. As a member of a minority, she faced hatred and condemnation, which she courageously overcame with humor, energy, and her overall approach to life. She knew exactly what she wanted and did not want, and her vitality was magnetic. During some of her exhibitions, she literally lived in the exhibition space, and it was even possible to experience a guided tour at four in the morning. A look into her culture, philosophy, and unforgettable style—both in art and in life—is extremely powerful and contains clear elements of activism (she visited women’s prisons). A significant milestone in her life was eye surgery in 1991, after which her first drawings were created during convalescence. This was followed by the founding of Galeria Mara in 1993 and subsequent international recognition between 2004 and 2009, when she exhibited in Budapest (Ludwig Museum), Venice (Roma Pavilion at the Biennale), and Vienna (Kunsthalle). Her establishment on the international art scene has continued to grow (RomaMoMA, ERIAC, Victoria and Albert Hall, Tate). The main section of the exhibition presents her painting from early experiments to her final works. She began with drawings and paintings inspired by headaches, continued through portraits of her only daughter and self-portraits, motifs of the house she built, and responses to women’s and Roma rights. The exhibition also shows her experimentation with various techniques and formats. Special attention is given to the so-called Blue Period (1997–2010), characterized by works that include textual commentaries. Alongside this series, the “red” paintings are also significant. A distinctive part of her oeuvre consists of miniatures (2000–2020)—a collection of paintings on unconventional materials such as cigarette and matchboxes and wooden stretcher bars. Across all of them, she captures life milestones, motherhood, and social themes. In addition to these topics, she also depicts classic landscape views, flowers, and trees (the Dancing Trees series). The visual identity and the title of the exhibition, This Is What I See From the Back Window at Sunset, are taken directly from the text of one such painting and also refer, on multiple levels, to her eye surgery and to fortune-telling. The heart of the exhibition is a unique set of 22 original tarot cards, which she created herself and used during her television fortune-telling sessions (they were published as a supplement to a women’s magazine). The deck contains classic life motifs and is complemented by explanatory texts describing the symbolism of each card. To emphasize this dimension of her work, enlarged versions of the cards were created, and the entire exhibition architecture is based on an actual card reading, enabling unexpected “readings,” interpretations, and understandings of her works and of the exhibition as a whole. The exhibition also includes an authentic recording from a television program in which OMARA tells fortunes for callers. Visitors enter a visually striking, colorful world filled with her powerful life statements. The exhibition is further complemented by music she loved (e.g., Karel Gott, Engelbert Humperdinck) and the scent of menthol cigars she used to smoke.
