Bongaon - a place of rich cultural and historical heritage
July 10 to 12, 2026
Friday to Sunday
Bongaon was a part of East Pakistan (Bangladesh) when India was declared independent on August 15, 1947. On realising this grave mistake Sir Radcliffe had to redraw the international boundary. Bongaon came into India, 3 days later, on August 18, 1947. Bongaon has experienced a lot of bloodshed and difficult times at the time of partition.
Bongaon had also witnessed "Neel Bidroho", the revolt by the Indigo Cultivators in the late 18th century. Dinabandhu Mitra, the famous playwright, who wrote Nildarpan, was a part of this town. Dinabandhu travelled around Bengal due to his work, but he maintained his connections with Chouberia (in Bongaon). He visited Chouberia often, sometimes accompanied by some of the noted figures of the time including Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar and Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay.
Bibhutibhusan Bandopadhyay, who penned Pather Pachali, Ichamati and Aranyak, was born in Bongaon. Talking about another luminary, Rakhaldas Bandyopadhyay, the founder of the Mohenjo-Daro civilisation, was also brought up in Bongaon.
Bongaon today conveys a rich cultural and historical heritage. This border town turns a soothing green in monsoons. Enjoy your stay here for two nights three days.
