Nightmare Culture has invited the Norwegian writer Didrik Søderlind to come and tell the fascinating story of Norwegian Black Metal scene in the nineties. The talk will be based on the book Lords of Chaos from 1998, which Didrik Søderlind wrote together with the American musician and writer, Michael Moynihan, and which later formed the basis for the Hollywood film of the same name from 2018. The talk will be about Black Metal's history and background in previous decades of occult rock and counterculture, and will try to explain how a group of teenagers' home-grown version of Satanism mixed with hatred directed at the Norwegian Christian community values, could lead to the series of murders and church burnings that shocked Norwegian society and made headlines worldwide in the period 1993-1995.
Didrik Søderlind has studied literature and the history of ideas and currently works as an advisor for the Human – Ethical Association, which is among the world's largest humanist associations. He is also active in religious dialogue as an editor for the journal Humanist, a columnist in the Christian newspaper Vårt Land and co-author of the dialogue book Priest and Atheist together with his friend Stian Kilde Aarebrot, who is a priest.
