The Knoxville Compost Project is pleased to present the first Backyard Composting Workshop of 2026! Join Kat McDearis, the owner of Green Heron Compost Services, as she discusses the importance of composting, how to properly turn food scraps into quality compost, & any trouble-shooting. Attendees will receive one free backyard composter & one countertop food scrap collection bin per household.
The event will be hosted at Ijams Visitor Center. Tickets for this event are free, but a $5 parking fee will apply to non-members. Visit Ijams' Parking FAQ page for information about how this parking fee supports their mission.
Due to this being a City-funded program, only residents within Knoxville's city limits may attend. Those residing outside of the City limits, in the County or beyond, are not eligible to register for these workshops. Additionally, those who have attended a prior workshop with us are also not eligible for registration. Thank you for your understanding.
This event is limited to 30 people. You are welcome to bring 1 additional member of your household, but please specify in your reservation if you are doing so. Future backyard composting workshops will be held - visit Knoxvilletn.gov/Compost for any updates and other Knoxville Compost Project information. We hope to see you there!
