Each person in Quebec produces more than 700 kg of waste per year. This culture of waste has consequences on purchasing power, the environment and the scarcity of resources. In a word, this way of consuming is not sustainable.
However, many of the items we throw away only need a basic repair to be perfectly usable again. We know this and sometimes despite the desire to repair, we cannot do it personally due to a lack of skills or tools.
Why this idea ?
First Repair Café in October 2009 in Amsterdam.
Since then, the international movement of Repair Cafés, coordinated by the Repair Café Netherlands association, has spread around the world.
Its mission is to:
reintroduce the common practice of repairing objects.
to preserve and transmit repair know-how.
to offer opportunities for meetings and exchanges within the framework of local events open to all.
to reduce the consumption of raw materials and energy needed
to manufacture new objects, and thus to fight against global warming and pollution.

Presentation of the Repair Café
Helping to repair any broken, damaged or broken object free of charge, whether it is an electrical object, a piece of furniture or any other domestic good, is the objective of the Repair Cafés. Between computers, toasters, shirts, dehumidifiers, suitcases, kettles, headlamps, sewing machines, vacuum cleaners, rice cookers, a Repair Café looks like a cabinet of curiosities!
It's a place where we repair together. Admission is open to all.
Its operation is simple: individuals bring their objects and are accompanied by volunteer repairers, who diagnose the origin of the breakdown and help with the repair: dismantling, brazing, gluing, electrical, electronic and computer work... Mutual aid often overcomes problems. The repair takes place in a friendly atmosphere and many participants spontaneously bring cakes and drinks.
Individual and collective benefits of the Repair Café
Environmental: by raising awareness among participants and preventing objects from going to landfill in a hurry, the Repair Café helps to preserve raw materials and energy, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and reduce atmospheric, hydraulic and soil pollution.
Social: free of charge and intended to be as informal as possible, the Repair Café wishes to be accessible and pleasant to all types of audiences. It promotes intergenerational meetings, social mixing, the co-construction of knowledge, the enhancement and learning of each person's skills, all in a friendly atmosphere that is generally very much appreciated.
Economic: because it contributes to a change in consumer habits (such as calling on a repairer, looking for spare parts or buying eco-designed products), the Repair Café allows jobs in the circular economy to (re)develop. In addition, the expenses avoided by Repair Café participants can be significant for those experiencing financial difficulties.
