From 2000 to 2017, McLachlin was Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Canada. She is the first woman to hold that position and the longest-serving Chief Justice in Canadian history. In 2018, McLachlin became a Companion of the Order of Canada, the highest honour within the Order. He settled in Montreal after completing a Master’s degree at New Brunswick University and his doctorate at the University of Wales in Cardiff. He enjoyed a thirty-year career at Marianopolis College as a teacher and administrator. He taught a wide variety of English literature courses, while never letting a semester go by without at least one course on the plays of Shakespeare. In retirement he and his wife, Kate, divide their time between Sutton and Lake Memphremagog, where Kate’s family has lived for many decades. Roger’s enthusiasm for Shakespeare has been kept alive by teaching at the Bishop’s University extension program in Knowlton, and giving public seminars to interested audiences.
