Between 50 and 30,000 years ago, South Africa witnessed technological reorganisation. Homo sapiens , having lived in the region for more than 200,000 years already, suddenly began to focus on miniaturised stone tools. Similar technological change around the same time in other places in the world is associated with population replacement and even species extinction, with Neanderthals disappearing around the same time as a novel way of producing stone tools is introduced. Yet, in southern Africa, it is Homo sapiens all the way down, to paraphrase a famous anecdote. New excavations at the site of Umhlatuzana rockshelter yield a new understanding of the changes, showing that we are not witnessing a pure technological shift, but the establishment of a socioeconomic system, with innovative ways of stone tool manufacture and use associated with wholesale changes in land-use and provisioning. The work provides a new perspective on the behaviours we recognise as fundamentally characterising all later human hunter-gatherer societies.
