The technique involves carefully cutting fabric and tucking it into carved grooves in a foam or wooden base to create intricate, quilt-like images—without any sewing. The result is a striking piece of textured art that blends colour, pattern, and design.While kinusaiga has its roots in traditional Japanese craftsmanship and resourceful textile practices, many modern artists also explore the technique alongside other cultural textile traditions that value storytelling, fabric reuse, and hand-crafted detail.In this workshop, Melissa will guide participants through the kinusaiga process step by step. You’ll learn how to prepare your design, select and layer fabrics for visual impact, cut and tuck fabric pieces into your base, and finish your artwork cleanly for display.
