Introduction to Contemporary Blacksmithing
Students will be led - step-by-step - through a series of fundamental forging techniques that will enable them to produce two finished projects: a toasting fork and a spoon. Samples of traditional and contemporary forged work will be shown. We will also discuss the ergonomics and functionality of each object. Students will first draw the object they’ll be forging as a way of encouraging close observation of general shape, proportions, surface texture, and various forged details. No previous metalworking or drawing experience is necessary. All that’s required is a sense of curiosity and a willingness to learn.
All materials, safety equipment, coffee and tea will be provided.
