"description": "The School of Medicine, established in Hamilton in 1966 and renamed the Michael G. DeGroote School of Medicine in 2004, offers major programs in undergraduate, postgraduate and graduate medical education. The Undergraduate Medical Program for the MD degree was initiated in 1969 and graduated its first students in May 1972. At present, 220 students are admitted to the program each year. The three-year program in medicine uses a problem-based approach to learning that should apply throughout the physician's career. The components have been organized in sequential blocks with early exposure to patients and case management. The academic program operates 11 months a year and students qualify for the MD degree at the end of the third academic year.In addition to the main Hamilton campus of the Michael G. DeGroote School of Medicine there are two Regional Campuses: one in the Waterloo Region and one in the Niagara Regions. These distributed medical education campuses focus on community and rural medical education. The curriculum delivered at all three of McMaster’s Michael G. DeGroote School of Medicine campuses is equivalent with the benefit of smaller class sizes in Waterloo and Niagara, leading to a more personalized learning experience. The Waterloo Regional Campus (WRC) was established in 2007 with an inaugural class of 15 undergraduate MD students. The annual intake has since grown to 32 undergraduate students and 27 postgraduate residents. As part of the downtown Kitchener Health Sciences Campus of the University of Waterloo, WRC is uniquely positioned to encourage an interdisciplinary learning environment for both students and faculty. The Waterloo Regional Campus is located in the University of Waterloo Health Sciences Campus at the corner of King and Victoria Streets in the heart of the Innovation District in downtown Kitchener, Ontario."
