Do join us!About this EventConversations with farmers on the future of farmland invertebratesThis sessions is part of a PhD project researching farmers’ ambitions for a thriving natural world and, in particular, how the small critters in the farm - the earthworms, the insects, the spiders - fit into these visions. We will be wanting to explore farmers’ relationship to the future of invertebrate biodiversity in Scotland:what roles do they envision themselves playing, given their goals for their business enterprise and the values that shape these goals?;what systems do they consider need to be in place for them to be able to enact these roles?We want this conversation to be quite informal and relaxed (even fun!), so we are inviting participant farmers to play a game with us where we build this future in four stages (motivation, decision-making, knowledge and worldview), and then map out the paths that would have led us there.Playing the gameIn the game, participants will be working together to explore what an economy (including food production) that has transitioned to a more biodiverse Scotland looks like and how society got there. The game progresses across a board that represents a walk from a desired future – that the participants will define – to the present day. In this walk, we will be going through the main events and milestones that participants think led Scottish communities to achieve that future. Each player will be given turns to express their vision, and discussion at the end of all turns will be mediated by facilitators.We will be asking farmers to share their views on:• What ought to be the purpose(s), beneficiaries and indicators of success of farming?• What resources ought to be allocated to the farming sector? Who should be deciding and how should these decisions be made?• What expertise is needed for reversing the decline in invertebrate biodiversity? Who ought to be providing this expertise? How ought we guarantee that that expertise is being used in implementation?• What ought to be the opportunities for those negatively affected by farming – but external to the farming system – to express their views to the farming sector? Who ought to represent their interests? What spaces ought to be available to reconcile different views?Why are we wanting to have this conversation?Invertebrates are essential to our food systems and their diversity is important to our resilience, particularly in a context of climate change. I am looking to understand how farmers as a group would see their sector reverse the decline in invertebrate species in farmland, how they would plan it. I am asking this coming from a conservation biology background: where I do know my way around bugs, but I do not know my way around farming.This research will help inform the approaches that conservation biologists, like myself, can take when working with and for farmers in enhancing on-farm biodiversity, and particularly on how best to approach that collaboration.LogisticsTime: the sessions are proposed to last 3 hours, with where dinner will be served to be eaten alongside the playing of the game (evening 'working tea' format). Reception of participants will start at 5 PM.Budget: meal and refreshments are provided.
