Anora or Ani as everyone calls her, is played by Mikey Maddison. She’s fluent in Russian and works in a strip club. She is emphatically not a sex worker, although she occasionally moonlights on the side, and is smarter and tougher than she lets on with clients. Vanya (Mark Eidelstein), is the spoilt son of a Russian oligarch, supposedly studying in New York but mostly out partying and spending his family fortune. He doesn’t want to go back to Russia to work in the family business so. He proposes marriage to stay in the USA. Ani agrees. When his family hear this, they send the heavies in, to annul the marriage.
Winner of the prestigious Palm d’Or, Anora is a contemporary Cinderella story and mirrors elements of the 1990 film Pretty Woman but this film has been made for a new generation. Please be forewarned, this tragi-comic romance is not for the prudish, with lap dancing and extensive sex scenes.
