Ambassadress: Rose Greenhow in Europe, 1863-1864
Rose O'Neal Greenhow is best known as an espionage agent who played a pivotal role in the Confederate victory at the First Battle of Manassas. However, following her imprisonment in the Old Capitol Prison and subsequent release to Richmond, she was sent on a diplomatic mission to Europe by the Confederate government. Greenhow moved in the highest social circles in England and France, had a private audience with Napoleon III, published her memoirs, was involved in negotiations with the U. S. government regarding Confederate naval officers captured after the sinking of the CSS Alabama, and may have become engaged to a British statesman and aristocrat. Declared "our ambassadress" by Confederate Secretary of the Navy Stephen Mallory and the "best diplomatist" he had ever seen by Edward Smith-Stanley, 14th Earl of Derby and three-time prime minister of the United Kingdom, Greenhow was almost certainly the first American-born woman to officially represent her government abroad. This first-person presentation, drawn from Rose Greenhow's own words found in her little-known European diary, provides a fascinating and intimate glimpse into a less familiar chapter of Civil War history-- the Confederacy's quest for international recognition through diplomatic efforts abroad.
