Ninepin Point Marine Reserve protects an unusual marine
environment. Here the saltwater is overlain by tannin-rich freshwater from the nearby Huon River. The tea-coloured tannin layer restricts
light penetration to the top few metres. This restricts light-loving brown and green algae to the very shallowest water. Many species normally only encountered in much deeper, darker waters – such as sea fans and sea whips, jackass morwong and red algae – are seen here in shallow water. Ninepin Point is one of the few places in the world where this phenomenon occurs. @parks.tas.gov.au
A few reminders:
- This is a free, casual meet-up, not a formal course or run by a club or business
- Please ensure you’re comfortable to look after yourself and always buddy up (you can find a buddy during the pre dive briefing if you come alone)
- We highly encouarge taking a freediving course to learn how to freedive safely and proficiently.
- Conditions may change - check the discussion tab for weather/location updates
- We highly encourage car pooling to these events as car parking is limited. Please find the car pooling thread under the discussion tab.
- Ninepin Point is a marine reserve so please do not anything that you find except rubbish
- The only thing we take at any Tassie Freedive Days are photos, so please no harvesting of abalone, fish, or crayfish etc.
Please send us a message if you have any questions or if you’re keen to donate a lucky door prize to next months event.
PS - The post dive picnic might just be the best part..
PPS - Tassie Freedive Days will fall on the first Saturday of each month after this one.
