Learn to swing a billhook and lay a hedge Devon style.About this EventHedgelaying, often called 'steeping' in Devon is the traditional way of managing our Devon hedgerows. Using billhook, axe and saw, the stems of young trees are partially severed and bent over to form a living fence, held in place by long pegs, called 'crooks', hammered into the bank. Though there are many different styles of hedgelaying, the Devon way is to create a low and thick hedge along the top of a large bank. This course is suitable for budding hedgers of all skill levels or none.
