Artists should be available to attend each session.Overview and ContextThe workshop series is designed to empower a group of young artists as they take their first independent steps into the creative sector. Over four to five sessions, we will use the collaborative and accessible process of zine-making as a central methodology to explore what it means to be an artist today.These sessions begin with the understanding that participants are already artists, bringing their unique skills, perspectives, and lived experiences. Our goal is to provide a supportive, resource-rich environment at SPG where they can develop their technical abilities, build confidence in their artistic voice, and experience the entire creative process from initial idea to public exhibition .The final outcome will be a co-produced publication (or series of publications), displayed within the gallery, affirming the participants' roles as legitimate artists and making their collective voice heard.Aims• To develop artistic and soft skills in a collaborative, low-pressure environment.• To build confidence in self-expression and articulating personal perspectives through art.• To demystify the artistic process, from ideation to public presentation.•To foster a sense of community and peer support among young artists.• To create a tangible, exhibited outcome that participants can be proud of.Zine-Making as a Framework Historically Zines have been a tool for underrepresented voices to bypass traditional gatekeepers. We will be looking at historical and contemporary zines (exploring what this kind of publishing means in a modern context) as an artist’s tool to make their voice and perspectives heard, but also engaging in the process of co-producing zines, using this process as a methodology for developing skills in being able to collaborate, communicate ideas, innovate, be resourceful, and see mistakes as opportunities to learn.Jaime Young (they/she) is a Black, Trans, South London-based arts educator and curator whose work spans graphic design, writing, and workshop facilitation. Jaime is dedicated to broadening access to the arts and advocating for marginalised groups. Their practice bridges the arts, education, activism, and social care, with previous experience working with Stanley Picker Gallery, Studio Voltaire, Black Cultural Archives, Kingston School of Art, Common Knowledge and Clapham Youth Centre, among others.Key informationDates Saturdays 11-1pm: 8, 15, 22, 19 November, and 6 December.Booking This is essential and a single ticket for 8 November includes each date of the five-week run.
