Join us for an unforgettable evening with acclaimed author Bruce Holsinger as he discusses his riveting new novel Culpability, Oprah's Book Club selection for July 2025. As Oprah herself said, "I was riveted until the very last shocking sentence!"
Culpability is a suspenseful family drama about moral responsibility in the age of artificial intelligence. The story follows the Cassidy-Shaw family after their autonomous minivan collides with an oncoming car, killing an elderly couple. Seventeen-year-old Charlie is in the driver's seat, with his father Noah riding shotgun, while his mother Lorelei—a world leader in artificial intelligence—and his twin sisters are absorbed in their own worlds. Each family member harbors a secret, implicating them all in the tragic accident.
What makes this novel particularly special for our community is its setting—the story takes place in the Northern Neck of Virginia, just off the Chesapeake Bay. Holsinger was inspired to write the novel after staying at an Airbnb on a cove in the Northern Neck during the first summer of the pandemic. We're thrilled to be bringing Bruce to our area to discuss this compelling story set right here at home!
Bruce Holsinger is the author of four previous novels, including The Displacements and The Gifted School, and serves as a professor in the Department of English at the University of Virginia, where he specializes in medieval literature and modern critical thought. He is the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship, and his essays and reviews have appeared in The New York Times, Vanity Fair, and many other publications.
Tickets are limited and can be purchased on our website. You can get the book with the ticket ($45) or just a seat for the event ($20). Culpability is now available in the store.
Don't miss this opportunity to meet one of today's most thought-provoking authors and discuss a novel that tackles the most pressing questions of our technological age—all set in the beautiful landscape we call home.
