- **Event Description**: View a hot air balloons at the Stratobowl, located near Rapid City. Weather permitting, balloons are scheduled for 3 sunrise flights (approx 6:30am) on September 5, 6, & 7 and one evening glow (approx 8:00pm) on September 5. 

This year is a celebration of 90 years of flight from this historic location - commemorating the successful high altitude launch that took place in 1935.

SUNRISE FLIGHTS:
Friday (5th), Saturday (6th) and Sunday (7th) sunrise flights - hot air balloons will launch out of the bowl. Flights will take place at approximately 6:30am each day. Viewing for spectators is located along the Stratobowl Rim Trail.

FRIDAY EVENING GLOW: In addition to the three sunrise flights, the balloons will glow on Friday (5th) evening. The balloons will remain stationary in the bottom of the bowl and glow in celebration of 90 years of aviation from this historic spot. To view the glow, it is best to arrive before dark (sunset is at 7:21pm) - balloons will start to prepare for glow at approx: 8pm. Viewing for spectators is located along the Stratobowl Rim Trail.

IMPORTANT TO NOTE:

Viewing is not allowed from the launch field -  it is PRIVATE PROPERTY and does not have enough access to provide safe access for spectators.

Unfortunately, the launch is not a guarantee because it is weather dependent. Pilots will determine if the conditions are safe prior to launch. Sometimes we cancel last minute, but we do our best to communicate in real time. Please check for updates on the main page throughout the course of the weekend.

Facilities, such as bathrooms, coffee, etc are not available. This is not an organized event, it is merely a planned launch with high local interest. Please plan accordingly by bringing water, chairs, cameras, etc. Please be safe when parking and walking to the viewing area. It is highly recommended to wear high visibility clothing and carry a flashlight when walking to the trailhead. If you have not been here before the trailhead is located on a major highway and there is little to no parking.
