The Derwent Water Challenge 🚶♀️⛰️
The Derwent Water Challenge is a beautiful, rewarding walking challenge that brings together some of the very best scenery in the Lakes. This 16-mile circular walk combines valley paths, woodland trails, quiet villages and three big climbs, creating a long, memorable day in the hills, with plenty of variety from start to finish.
You’ll enjoy outstanding views from Cat Bells and Walla Crag — two of the finest viewpoints in the Lake District — along with classic landmarks such as Ashness Bridge, Surprise View and Watendlath Tarn. While the route does form a circuit of Derwent Water, this is far more than a lakeside walk and offers a proper sense of journey through Borrowdale and the surrounding fells.
Challenging, scenic and hugely enjoyable, this is a brilliant option for walkers who want a full day out in the hills and the satisfaction of completing a unique Lake District challenge.
What to expect:
- 16 miles of varied Lake District terrain
- Just over 1,000 metres of ascent
- Big views, classic landmarks and quieter valley sections
- Small group guided walk led by experienced mountain leaders
