# Event Details

- **Event Name**: Summit Saturday: Red Hill
- **Event Start and End Date**: Sat, 09 May, 2026 at 08:00 am – Sat, 09 May, 2026 at 01:00 pm (-07:00)
- **Event Description**: If you have previously completed the Intermediate Hiking for Fitness Program or can hike 6.5 miles with at least 1,600ft of elevation, this hike may be right for you. We strongly recommend completion of the shorter version of the Bald Mt. hike (in and out via Bald Mountain Trail) as a pre-requisite.

This hike will take place (mostly) at Sugarloaf's McCormick Addition, starting at the Los Alamos Rd entrance to Hood Mountain Regional Park. From the Los Alamos parking lot, we will start out on Hood Mtn Rd and cross into Sugarloaf at Salt Creek. We will take Quercus, Headwaters, and Grandmother Oak Trails to Red Hill. From there, we will follow a game trail to return to Maple Glen Trail where we will have lunch. We return via Maple Glen to Headwaters Trail and backtrack to the parking lot.

This event requires advance registration; day-of on site tickets will not be available. There is a $10 deposit per ticket, which will be returned post-hike, unless you choose to donate it to support Sugarloaf. Wear appropriate footwear for rocky/slippery trails and multiple layers. Be prepared for two slippery water crossings; we strongly recommend bringing water shoes, hiking poles, and an additional pair of socks. Bring your lunch, at least two quarts of water, and sun protection. Heavy rains cancel. The Regional Park parking fee ($8 daily) applies.

Ease of access: The Hood Mountain Regional Park parking lot at the end of Los Alamos Rd has a porta-potty, but it does NOT have accessible parking, water, or cell phone access. The Hood Mtn trailhead starts at the eastern side of the lot and follows Salt Creek for approximately 0.9 miles. It is a fairly flat fire road that connects the parking lot to the Quercus Trail in Sugarloaf's McCormick Addition. There is a creek crossing with a board over a spillway a few feet after entering Sugarloaf. The Quercus Trail is a wide access road of approximately 1 mile and an elevation gain of 500 ft. It splits Headwaters Trail, with our route taking the left 0.3-mile arm for an additional elevation gain of 185 ft. to connect with the Grandmother Oak Trail, a social trail that is steep, narrow, and at times, slippery with scree (0.9 mi, ~440 ft ascent to Red Hill). From there, we'll take a game trail for about 0.5 mile (descending ~200 ft) to Maple Glen Trail, a dirt access road where we will continue for 1.4 miles (descending 530 ft into the headwaters of Wildcat Creek and then ascending 280 ft) back to Headwaters Trail. Grades can be steep in places. Several springs and gully make parts of the road wet even in dry seasons. We will finish the hike by backtracking to the parking lot.
