Join CA Certified Naturalist John Lynch on this 5-mile guided nature hike with approximately 800 feet of elevation gain. We'll be looking up rather than down to discover what's flying around, learning a little about creek, pond, and meadow habitats. Our route will explore the Lower Bald Mountain Trail to look for some summer wildflowers and over to the Vista Trail to a small pond/marsh for butterflies and dragonflies with return via Meadow Trail and a short over-and-back to the "Butterfly Crossing" at Rattlesnake Creek on Hillside Trail. Meet at the White Barn parking area. Tickets are $10 for general audiences, $5 for students, youth (12-17 year olds must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian), Sugarloaf members, Sugarloaf or RFO volunteers, and free for children 7-11. Not recommended for children younger than 7. Tickets day-of on site are $15 and might not be available Wear comfortable clothing, appropriate footwear for rocky/slippery trails, and sun protection. Bring at least a quart of water, and if you desire, a snack, butterfly or wildflower guides, or a camera. Parking fees apply. Ease of access: The White Barn parking lot has one van-designated accessible parking spot, an accessible porta-potty, and a potable water spigot near the information kiosk. There is no cell service in this area. There is a flat, paved road of 0.10 miles from the White Barn lot to the Lower Bald Mountain trailhead outside the Robert Ferguson Observatory. Lower Bald Mountain Trail starts out as a gravel and dirt trail with an incline of approximately 150 ft. After 0.2 miles, it splits. The northern junction (0.6 miles) becomes narrow, with multiple switchbacks and inclines and an elevation gain of approximately 500ft up to the Bald Mtn Trail junction. Bald Mountain Trail is a paved fire road. It intersects Vista Trail after 0.2 miles. Vista is a narrow dirt trail. The first 0.7 miles are fairly flat, whereas the following 0.9 miles descend nearly 800 ft on a narrow, sometimes slippery trail. It has multiple built in rock steps and at least 3 sets of stairs. It connects with Gray Pine Trail, an unpaved fire road. Its lower portion connects with Meadow Trail after 0.2 miles. Meadow is a fairly flat dirt and gravel fire road of 0.9 miles that returns back to the Robert Ferguson Observatory and the White Barn parking lot. From the White Barn parking lot, the Creekside Nature Trail splits into an ADA-compliant section to the west and a non-ADA portion to the east. The eastern portion is a narrow dirt trail that crosses Sonoma Creek over a narrow cable bridge and ascends approximately 0.2 miles and 100 ft to the junction with Hillside Trail.
