About the event

A "Spooky" Autumn Hike
Join Certified California Naturalist John Lynch on a “spooky” 3 mile, 3.5 hour hike from Creekside to Hillside and back through the meadow exploring this very special season.

With Halloween around the corner, we might just discover witches' butter, flying saucer galls, zombie leaves, plants that have been skeletonized, or even some “ghostly“ sheet web spiders. Have the bats been using their bat house, let’s find out. We’ll also see if we can identify some of the “treats” of the season (seeds, nuts, and berries) and the plants that produce them. Oh, and of course, spooky stories.

Tickets are $10 for general audiences, $5 for youth (12-17 year olds), students, Sugarloaf members, Sugarloaf volunteers, and free for children under 12. All minors must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. Meet at the White Barn parking lot. Bring at least a quart of water, sun protection, wear appropriate clothing and footwear for slippery and rocky trails, and if desired, a snack. Parking fees apply. Heavy rains cancel.

Ease of access: The White Barn parking area has one van-designed parking spot, one accessible porta-potty, and a potable water spigot adjacent to the information board. Creekside Trail has two trailheads. The trailhead from the White Barn is ADA compliant for about 0.1 miles. Our route for this hike veers off to the left across a narrow bridge and single-track trail that connects with Hillside. Hillside Trail is a gravel and dirt road with two 100-ft hills and a small stream crossing. Meadow is a mostly flat composite trail manageable by strollers and wheelchairs from the trailhead to about a mile in, although officially not an ADA-compliant trail. The entire loop is a fire road sometimes driven by authorized vehicles.
